WELLS, "Betty Faye", Betty Faye Wells, 81. Betty Faye Wells passed away Monday afternoon, July 16th. Betty Faye was born in White Town, South Carolina, on August 6, 1930. She was a woman of spunk, and humor. She married W.T. Wells on Valentine's Day in 1948. She was a young bride at 17 marrying a man 11 years her senior, but she didn’t let the age difference intimidate her.
She decided early in her marriage that she wanted to earn her own income and went to beauty school in Augusta, GA. Shortly after establishing herself as a Beautician, she opened Betty Faye’s Beauty Shop as a business on the back of her home. The fact that she was able to balance a career of her own while raising three children was a feat in those days. Her shop served as more than just a place to have your hair done, it was also a place for friendship, and community.
Betty Faye was a hard working woman. She rarely sat down for more than two minutes at a time. She certainly did not eat the bread of idleness. She was constantly cooking, cleaning, or canning something. She loved to bake and often made goodies for friends and relatives. Betty Faye loved caring for others and at one point volunteered with the EMS to help those in need. She also chose to serve friends and loved ones in death by preparing them for viewings. She considered it a final act of love for that person and stepped up to fill a need that not just anyone would fill. Even though Betty Faye spent her entire life living in a small area, she loved to travel.
She travelled to Spain to visit her daughter’s family while they were stationed abroad and took many a guided bus tour to various cities within the U.S. with her sister, Helen. She also spent many a summer camping at Myrtle Beach with her children and grandchildren. She was also a bit mischievous. After being pranked by a friend she returned the favor in kind by baking some donughts as a gift to the prankster. Unbeknownst to the recipient those donughts had a special filling of cotton coil (a product only found in beauty salons).
Betty Faye’s sense of humor was also clearly shown when during one family Easter egg hunt she wore a straw hat with a goose on it; a two foot tall goose of the plastic variety. Betty Faye also loved music. She loved singing in the choir at her church and had a strong faith in the Lord. She was one amazing lady, a strong matriarch to a loving family, and she will be sorely missed. Betty Faye is survived by her husband, W. T. Wells, her three children Frances, Thomas, and John, four grandchildren, six great grandchildren (so far), and an entire close knit community of loving relations and friends. |
