How can anyone eulogize Eugene better than himself! The following is taken from a chain email he responded to on April 1, 2007:

FOUR JOBS I HAVE HAD IN MY LIFE:

  • Truck Driver until the end of time, it seems
  • Asphalt and Concrete Technican
  • Park leadman
  • Pole climber

FOUR MOVIES I WOULD WATCH OVER AND OVER:

  • Laurel and Hardy all day and night

FOUR PLACES I HAVE LIVED:

  • Anadarko, Okla.
  • Phoenix, Ariz.
  • Lewisville, Irving, Denton, Slidell, Bridgeport, Texas

FOUR OF MY FAVORITE FOODS:

  • 1-1/4 inch Ribeye with baked potato, with all the trimmings, course cooked to my perfection.
  • Smoked Ham with pinto beans, fried potatoes and homemade hot rolls.
  • Chicken fried steak, cream mashed potatoes, smother in white gravy, with fried green beans on the side.
  • Oven baked pork chops, sittin on top of rice and mushrooms.
  • My #1 is Crappie, french fries, pinto beans and cornbread.

FOUR PLACES I WOULD RATHER BE NOW:

  • Nowhere but Bridgeport Texas, it's quiet, it's country and it's home, Thank you very much, Lord.

FOUR THINGS I WANT TO DO BEFORE I DIE:

  • I would like to pull in that catfish, that's bigger than me, then just let him go.
  • More grandkids.
  • See my son graduate from college.
  • Ride the wind.

FOUR PEOPLE I THINK WILL RESPOND:

  • Anyone that's got the time, isn't that what it's all about TIME, remember that song? The Rolling Stones.

These lists reflect what his family knew well about Eugene: His passions for fishing, food, and family and, of course, riding his motorcycle ("the wind").

He prefaced these lists with the following comment:

Hey . . . How bout the four jobs I hated the most, got any of those? . . . . I hated the military, felt like being in prison, except that you had a tiny bit of freedom. Then I hated those asphalt jobs, s**t stinks, then concrete . . . . Worse of all is truck driven, long hours, no time off, at times you can fall asleep at the wheel, pretty scary when you don't know how you got from point A to B. I really believe God holds your hand.

It would seem he never had a job that he enjoyed, but we all know that, once he bought his first home computer, he was hooked on technology and dreamed of what it would be like to have a career working with computers.

We love you, Eugene. We will miss you and take comfort knowing that we will eventually be with you again.

I am so very sorry for your loss. I personally did not know Mr. David Gatlin but i want you to know that my prayers are with you all. Pray to the "God of all comfort"(1 Corinthians 1:3) because HE cares for each and every one of us. Isaiah 25:8 "...He will swallow up death forever...". that is a promise from God so please take courage and my prayers will be with you.

I remember the Gatlin's being a big family and a loyal family. I loved it when when we all got together (which was often) to eat, drink and celebrate. Eugene loved steak and potatos and he loved my mom's Texas Dessert! Come to think of it, there wasn't much in the way of food Eugene didn't enjoy. He was the human garbage disposal! He'd look at you with that look and say, "you gonna' eat that?" I love all of my uncles and I have lost all of them in a year. I loved them all like my dad. I pray I w...» read more

Being the eldest child of Richard and Hazel Gatlin, I have known all of my brothers and sisters from birth. Because of this I thought they would always be around. I can tell you this is not always true, because I have lost all three of my younger brothers in the last year and one month to the day. I have heard it said so many times--"Live each day as though it were your last." Never miss an opportunity to say, "I love you." Our family has had and will continue to have many joyous mom...» read more

My brother is kind in his description of Eugene calling him "unique". Eugene was a tough guy to know, so happens he loved me and called me his son. So that put me on the inside, which was not always fun but it just was what it was. He did try to teach me to clean catfish and I resisted so he wrestled me to the ground and slapped me on the back a few times with a stringer of catfish. I did watch him do it a few times though so in a pinch I think I could manage. He taught me how to wax a car. ...» read more

Uncle Eugene wanted to teach you something.  Whether it was cleaning your wheels, sharpening a knife, rebuilding an engine, tying a lure, cleaning a catfish, frying potatoes, throwing a baseball, or throwing a punch, you could be sure if Uncle Eugene was teaching you, you were going to be taught the right technique. I will miss him. He was a unique character in our family and a model of loyalty.
