I found out about Denny Doherty's death last year. I remember him as the Harbor Master. I didn't know he was a member of the Mamas and Papas until last year. His death has saddened as well as shocked me. We also share something: my dad's father was born in Canada.

If you only wrote California Dreamin for my enjoyment alone it would have been worth it....the song remains timeless and always brings a mixture of feelings no other song can emote... oh Denny! I had know idea of your passing, someone helped me to look u up and to my sadness heard the news of your death. Denny and I were very close friends and lived next to each other in Appian Way. He showded up at my parents home in Atherton periodlcally with Joe his bodyguard. He actually came over with his 3 piece suit and would excuse himself to my mother "excuse me Ms. Tully I just vomited on my suit may I please come in?" And of course he did. Denny . . . what to say. You were such a catalyst in my life. Many firsts with you. I was with you and Cass and John and Zally in Georgetown, Washington DC in early 60's. (The Shadows and Cellar Door)in the very early days (MUGWUMPS!). We were all trying to break into the BIZ. I'm the same age as Michelle and you guys 'adopted' me. I met Denny in 1986 in a little studio in Mississauga.We hit it off right away and started to get together whenever we could to sit and play our acoustics and demo new song ideas.We both loved leadbelly and the old blues music.I always found him entertaining.Once in a while I dragged him out to small bars and coffee houses to sing with me.He liked that cause nobody knew who he was.He always called me when he wanted to talk.In June we hung out and recorded a few things but I had to leave to tour ... » read more
