Survived By: James Nursser

Floyd Matthew Patterson, of Etna, quietly passed on Thursday, July 2, 2009. Floyd was born in Baltimore, Md., to Dan and Almerta Patterson. The family moved to Washington D.C. in the early 1960s, where Floyd attended Cleveland Elementary School, Johnson Junior High School and Ballou High School.

Upon graduation, Floyd was the second in the family to leave for college. He graduated from Waynesburg College with his Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology and went on to get his masters of social work degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Floyd was always looking out for others from the time he was a child on 8th Street in Washington, D.C. until his home-going in Pittsburgh.

He joined Central Avenue Church of God, Capital Heights, Md., at an early age and committed his life to Jesus Christ at the age of 11. He was an active, faithful member of the church for many years until he departed for college. While in Pennsylvania, he attend the Homewood Church of God, until he moved his membership to Fourth Presbyterian Church. Everyone that knew Floyd knew that he was always slim in stature, but had a heart as big as the Grand Canyon.

He was, without dispute, one of God's bright shining lights, one that would open his heart and his home to a friend in need without hesitation. Floyd was a champion in the fight against HIV-Aids and scored several accomplishments, including a soon-to-be-released documentary.

He served on numerous committees and boards to advance awareness and equality for HIV/Aids. Floyd served with the Pittsburgh Aids Task Force, the UHIMWE Project, South Western Aids Planning Coalition, Planning Committee for Healing Weekend, was the executive director of SEVEN, a current board member for the Sheppard Wellness Community and several others.

He was last employed with the Association Myasthenias Gravis as a counselor. Floyd was always busy doing something for others and this is the legacy of love that he leaves with us. He was preceded in death by his father, Dan Patterson; mother, Almerta Patterson; sisters, Audrey Mack and Mary Patterson; and brother, Ray Charles Patterson. He leaves to cherish his life partner and friend, James Nusser; three sisters, Linda Patterson, of Washington, D.C., Lila Webb, of New York, N.Y., and Geneva (and Stanley), of Washington, D.C.; five brothers, William Patterson, of Washington, D.C., the Rev. James (and Susianne) Patterson, of Papillion, Neb.; Derrick (and Dede) Patterson, of Suitland, Md., Joseph (and Melissa) Patterson, of Largo, Md., and the Rev. Carl (and Shirley) Patterson, of Fort Washington, Md.; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of funeral ceremony at noon Tuesday, July 7, at Fourth Presbyterian Church, 5450 Friendship Ave., Pittsburgh. Interment in Harmony Memorial Park, Largo, Md. Arrangements entrusted to WHITE MEMORIAL CHAPEL OF POINT BREEZE.
