Gerald (Jerry) Eugene Krewson of Morehead City died Friday, Sept. 1, 2006, at home, peacefully with his loyal pets Beau Beau and Tanner by his side.
His funeral, with military honors, was held Monday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel.
Proud and retired with honors from military service in the U.S. Marine Corps, he continued his duty and commitment to the USMC through employment with Northrop Grumman. Mr. Krewson accrued more than 45 years of continuous service supporting the military. He was recognized for his duty and leadership, called upon for numerous nationally recognized major military operations. Some of his assignments included (HMH-463) Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 463 during Operation End Sweep, where he incurred significant life-threatening injuries during an aircraft crash. Upon his rescue, the waters were full of aviation fuel and sea snakes, he found his fellow Marines floating face down and without hesitation dove back in, pulling them to safety, and was instrumental in saving the lives of the pilot and co-pilot.
For more than 20 years he supported U.S. Marine Corps Marine Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadrons, 1, 2, 3 and 4, where he was deployed to Bahrain for nine months in support of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Additionally, he supported Decisive Endeavor, Deliberate Guard, Noble Anvil, Allied Force, Winter Surge, Foal Eagle, Cope Tiger, Cobra Gold, Cope North, Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom II. VMAQ-2 was subsequently chosen as the Marine Corps Aviation Association 2005 Prowler Squadron of the Year.
His military decorations include the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Good Conduct Medal with four stars, Vietnam Service Medal with a Silver Star, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 1969 Device, Navy Achievement Medal with ”V”, Combat Action Ribbon, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Rifle Expert Badge (M-16), Pistol Expert Badge (.45).
He was a graduate of Delaware Valley Regional High School Class of 1962 and won an award at his 20th high school anniversary for “Loss of the Most Hair” (This great feat was achieved due to the jet fuel in the preceding noted aircraft crash, burning his hair off). He was a member of American Legion Post 113, Frenchtown, N.J., Loyal Order of Moose, Newport Lodge 2194 Lifetime Member and VFW Havelock, N.C. Post 7315.
Mr. Krewson was committed to the U.S. Marine Corps' core values. His support started with the Vietnam conflict and carried through to the Global War on Terrorism. Jerry's lead-by-example style was based on strong vision of the future. He built trust through displaying a good sense of character composed of beliefs, values, skills and traits. Mr. Krewson was a person with strong character, showing drive, energy, determination, self-discipline, willpower and nerve.
His beloved values were attributes about the worth of people. He believed skills are abilities that a person gains throughout life, traits are distinguishing qualities and characteristics the knowledge of a person. He saw what he wanted and went after it. His behavior won trust, loyalty and ensured the USMC continued vitality.
Integrity, Charter, Loyalty, Honor, Courage – Not Complacency, Commitment, are expressions of Jerry's duty and values he instilled in each of his three daughters.
He is survived by three daughters, Melody Kay Krewson Bennett and husband Craig Thomas Bennett of Cocoa Beach, Fla., Michelle Ann Mills and husband Stuart Mills of Newport and Sherri Lynn Garner and husband Clayton Garner Jr. of Newport; his first wife and mother of his daughters, Patricia Krewson; six grandchildren, Crystal Ann Bennett, Craig Thomas Bennett, II, Brandon Lee Scronce, Alexis KaLynn Mills, Sydney Leigh Scronce and Kirby Lee Mills; two sisters, Sharon Downing of Downing Town, Pa., and Melody Vrancken of West Olive, Mich
