Karen Johnson Wooden, 76, of Grand Rapids Minnesota and Mercer Island Washington, died Wednesday March 26, 2008 at the Grand Itasca Hospital in Grand Rapids.
Born to Herbert David and Dixie Johnson on February 26, 1932, Karen attended school in Illinois, culminating with a degree from La Grange Junior College. Karen was an accountant before she married her college sweetheart David Rand Wooden on October 9, 1954. They lived in Mendota Heights Minnesota from 1957 until 1973, during which time they adopted two children. In 1973, the family moved to Mercer Island, returning to the Grand Rapids area for the summers on Bluewater Lake in Wabana Township.
Karen was active in her support of Children’s Orthopedic Hospital in Seattle, working on and chairing the Mercer Island phone book fund-raiser for several years. She was a devoted Campfire leader and active with Boy Scout Troop 668. She also will be remembered for her talents with knitting needles, especially on cold nights as lucky recipients of her handiwork curl up under cozy afghans.
Preceded in death by her parents, Karen is survived by her husband of 53 years, David Rand Wooden; son Richard Sauer-Wooden of Seattle WA; daughter Susan Wooden La Pointe McLaughlin of Bellevue Washington; her son-in-law Jeff McLaughlin of Everett Washington; three grandsons: Thadious, Austin, and Braeden; Sister Myrna Floch and husband Robert of La Grange Illinois and Largo Florida; Sister Lynn Waechter of Lockport Illinois; numerous nieces and nephews, including God-daughter Joan Waechter Biaggio.
In lieu of flowers, tax-deductible remembrances may be sent to:
Itasca Hospice Partners PO Box 853 Grand Rapids MN 55744-0853
No services will be held at this time. Karen’s life will be celebrated this summer at Bluewater Lake. |
