Lucy Joyce Allan was born on the 8th Jan 1930 at Holbrook NSW, the 5th of seven children to William & Lucy Allan. She spent her first 10 years on a fruit orchard in Kyabram, Victoria, before her parents sold up and moved to Sandringham in Melbourne, then eventually to settle in Geelong, Victoria. Lucy did the rest of her schooling in Geelong where she excelled in sport. She was a natural at running and basketball and everybody wanted Lucy on their side.
After finishing school she worked at the Geelong Woollen Mill. She studied the piano and also studied at her life’s ambition to be a missionary. But too much study took its toll; she was mentally drained and was prescribed a rest in the country.
Lucy’s house always had an open door. The couple never had a lot of money, but they were generous with their time, skills, and home grown and home made produce. Hardly one Christmas dinner went by without a guest or two who would otherwise have spent a solitary Christmas day. There was always someone dropping in for a drink and a chat.
Lucy did a bit of hairdressing and decided she might try to make some money from this to help out. She was good at hairdressing but good-hearted and generous, and this resulted in her refusing any money from her close friends and the poor. Her oldest son remembers her very good friend Pat insisting to pay and Lucy insisting not to take the money. He recalls watching them throwing the money at each other all the way up the pathway to the front gate.
Lucy and Sam had four children, tragically they lost their fourth, a son, at age 2. Lucy is survived by three children, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Lucy’s family send to you, her friends and family in Brisbane, their gratitide for helping her to feel right at home in this lovely State of Queensland. Lucy was extremely happy to be here, amongst such caring and happy people, and the weather she adored. Though she knew you for only a short time, you made a difference in her life. |
