Born on November 15, 1936 to Odenigbo Nnabugwu and Uzor Oluogu both of Imeama Mgbowo, Mark Nnabugwu attended Saint Charles Teacher Training College Onitsha where he won many academic and soccer laurels and where he also acted as Senior Prefect. After his graduation from St Charles, he taught firstly in Awgu, then in Mgbowo, Ogbaku and later Nsukka. While a teacher at St John's Elementary School in Mgbowo, the school was recognized as one of the best schools in the old Eastern Region with one of the students winning a scholarship award. Some of the pupils that he taught and mentored at St John's would end up becoming Federal Permanent Secretaries and University Vice - Chancellors.
Mark would eventually gain admission to the Salisbury campus of the University of London where he obtained a Bachelors Degree in Economics.
He returned to Nigeria just before the civil war in 1967, married his wife, Paulyne Winifred Akpa and joined the Eastern Nigeria Civil Service shortly after. The civil war temporarily delayed his rise in the service. He survived the war and was reabsorbed into the East Central State Ministry of Trade from where he transferred to the Ministry of External Affairs after passing the qualifying exams.
He would stay on and make his mark in the the Ministry of External Affairs as a career diplomat for the next 25 years
His first posting was to India, then to Togo, then to the United Kingdom, then to Zimbabwe, then to the United States and lastly to the Gambia from where he retired as a full ambassador in 1995.
Mark was blessed with a loving wife, six goodly children and many grand children
There is firstly, Dr Ngozika Orjioke who is a pulmonologist-intensivist in Atlanta. She was born in 1968 during the civil war years. Then there is Dr Chinwe Egbo, a Phoenix-Arizona-based pediatrician who was born two years later in 1970. The third child, Okechukwu came in 1971 after the war ended. Okechukwu studied for his MBA at Wharton College, Pennsylavania and lives and works in the San Francisco bay area in the field of private equity funding. In 1975, God blessed them with another son, Emeka Ajuluchi who studied economics at Perpedine University and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. Chinapaife came in 1977. She studied computer engineering at ESUT Enugu and works with the global software giant SAP in Lagos. Chijioke Odenigbo, the last child was born in 1983. He holds a masters degree in Information Systems from New York's Syracuse University and practices as a software support engineer with a Long-Island-based software engineering firm.
Ambassador Eze played soccer in his school days and loved to have a good laugh. He was also a very contemplative man who considered the many angles of an issue before giving counsel. He had a temperate mien at all times and always stood on the side of truth. He would deliver truth in a way that does not appear judgmental. He read widely, spoke wisely and carefully and loved peace. He loved to listen to Handel's "Messiah" and was a man whose wise counsel was sought by many from far and near.
Ambassador Mark Nnabugwu Eze will be remembered for the role he played during the trying days of West Africa's pioneering peace-keeping force - ECOMOG. Along with his other colleagues, he professionally but quietly managed the diplomatic side of ECOMOG's operations especially after the Nigerian Embassy in Monrovia was attacked by Charles Taylor's troops and the office had to temporarily close down.
He will also be remembered for his quiet and wise counsels during times of conflict at home and in family circles. He was a peace-maker extraordinaire.
In 2010, he suffered a stroke which affected his left side. He was flown to firstly to Phoenix Arizona and later to Irvine California for treatment and recuperation. By the time that he returned to Nigeria in November 2010, he was able to speak and engage people in intelligent discussions. He was also able, after many efforts at physiotherapy, to use, with some effort, his left side which had been affected by the stroke.
Ambassador Eze gave his life to Jesus Christ in 2010 and learnt to depend on the Lord Jesus.
On Saturday morning, June 2, he woke up and complained of fatigue. He collapsed after a while and was taken to the hospital. He was pronounced dead by the doctors shortly after. He died quietly and peacefully.
He is survived by his lovely wife, Lady Paulyne Winifred Eze, his six children, sisters, brothers, his 15 grand children, a mother-in-law, three sons-in-law, one daughter-in-law and many nephews and nieces.
We thank God immensely for his life

My condolences to the entire Eze family.
As a friend of Chijioke, and having made acquaintances with 'Napa and Emeka, I've come to understand how tightly knit the Eze family is.
From what I've heard and read, Mr Eze was an honorable, well respected and well loved man who, I can say without hesitation, has passed on many of these qualities to his children and grandchildren.
Best of wishes through this trying period.

There is nothing that I can say to take away the pain of these days. There is not a shoulder on earth big enough to cry on to stop the hurt. But I do know of a GREAT PHYSICIAN who says to bring all you burdens and cares to He will bear them. So I lift you and your family up to Him during this time and the months to follow and ask that He carry you during this time. If there is anything I can do please do not hestitate to ask. God Bless and with my love,
