This memorial website was created in the memory of
Matthew Wilcox, born
in Aberystwith
on the 14th March 1838
and passed away on the 14th March 1917, 79 years of age.
Matthew was born in Aberystwith, Cardiganshire, Wales in 1838. He is buried at St. Peter's Churchyard, Cockett, Swansea.
In the 1881 Census, Matthew (1838) appears as having the occupation of a "Cabman" and as "Head of Family" with Martha (1837), his wife, and seven children: William (1862 in Cardigan), Sarah (1864 in Cardigan), John (1867 in Cardigan), Charles (1869 in Cardigan), Thomas (1871 in Cardigan), Richard (1873 in Swansea) and Florence (1880 in Swansea). In 1881, they lived at 13 Crole Street, Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales.
It is believed that he and his wife lived a rather austere life constantly struggling for survival and for attending to the needs of the children.
