Over his 89 years, Peter had had a varied life, from flying with the RAF in the Second World War to being a meteorologist for the US military, but his last few years in England were his most settled. He loved his home and garden and was always happy to return there after a short trip out. The simple pleasures of reading the daily paper and weekly magazines, watching the birds feeding in the garden, the strawberries ripening and the pansies blooming sustained him in his final months as his mobility declined. Having watched his wife Lorna succumb slowly to Alzheimer's, and finally passing away in 2006, he may have thought that his life could be drawing to a close - until he met and married Marguerite (known to old friends as Tops) at the age of 86! Together they did crosswords and played Scrabble, Rummikub and Bananagrams and provided each other with companionship and support. She was with him in the nursing home at the end of his struggle with colon cancer. Having had no children of his own, he was delighted to acquire step-children, first Gill and Russell when he married Lorna in 1975, then Marion when he married Tops in 2007. His love for his step-grandchildren Matthew, Paul, two Andrews and Peter as well as step-great-grandchildren Elliott and Phoebe, Katy and Toby, was generous and sincere. For many years he attended Zion Baptist church and was a deacon - the fellow church members and new pastor showed great care for him when he became more ill. Despite being a very shy and private man, the warmth of his smile, sense of humour and appreciation of others made him admired by all, right to the end. Both the hospital and nursing home staff remarked on what a nice man he was, always with a smile for them, and how many visitors he had. Family, church friends and neighbours all wanted to offer him their support. His brother and sister and their spouses in the US would have loved to be with him, but sent him emails to show their care from afar. He was an example of patient endurance, and of being happy in all circumstances |

My memories of Peter were most vivid when I took care of his mother, my grandmother, Lois. Peter wanted nothing more than his mother to be well cared for. In his last days, we prayed for the very same. I am thankful that he found Tops and that she could be there for him during the last and toughest days. Being in the states, we felt so far away, but knew he was in good hands. My husband John still talks about the stories Peter shared with him about his "flying days". Peter, you will be remembere...

Being the "baby sister", fourteen years younger, I really didn't know Pete until after WWII since he joined the RCAF when I was about six. Over the years when we were raising a family he was able to visit on a frequent basis and the brother I had known through letters became real. His sense of humor and love of family were always prominent. Fortunately my husband and children were able to get to know him and appreciate his history and love of life. We were all delighted when a few years ago ...

A Short History of Peter’s Life - Part 4
After the war Peter became a meteorologist in the Air Force and was stationed at a number of bases around the world before he retired from the Air Force as a full Colonel. He almost immediately was hired to be a civilian meteorologist. In 1975 while still working for the Air Force as a civilian he married Lorna who he had known during his early years of flying in England. They eventually moved to Mirfield where she had children from a previous marria...

Peter was one of the best; courageous, uncomplaining and determined to keep going despite his illness making him weaker and weaker. He was a great dad, a loving grandad and great grandad and will be very much missed by all who knew him. Rest in peace.

Peter was a delightful person and a good man. He was kind and hospitable, having opened his home to us when we visited England. We enjoyed his company--he was knowledgeable on so many subjects! And what a green thumb! We will miss him and will keep his family in our thoughts and prayers. Peace to you, Peter...

Sympathy eCards
24 Aug 2010 – Paul and Denise Lancaster sent this sympathy ecard and wrote:
Dear Marguerite and ALL the family,
We send you our deepest sympathy and thoughts to all at this sad time.
Even so, Lord, quickly come,
bring your final harvest home;
gather now your people in,
free from sorrow, free from sin;
there, together purified,
ever thankful at your side:
come, with all your angels, come,
raise the glorious harvest-home.
Henry Alford (1810-71)
We thank God that Peter, our dear friend is now safely home and in God's hands for ever!
Our love and prayers, God bless
Paul and Denise
