Phanor Joseph Metoyer Sr.
March 25, 1917 – November 29, 2008
Phanor Joseph Metoyer Sr. was born March 25, 1917 to the late Louis Metoyer and Ella Severin Metoyer in Bermuda, Louisiana. Phanor was the eighth of ten children born to this union. His brothers Morrell, Tophiel, Eldridge, Emmite, James and sisters Rosa Mae Metoyer and Ella Sylvie preceded him in death.
On March 31, 1946, Phanor united in Holy Matrimony with Velma Veronica Conant and they are the loving parents of Florence Marie, Phanor Joseph Jr, Louis, Rodney, John Ronald, Frederick, Paul Michael and Stephanie. The family moved from Natchitoches, Louisiana in 1963 to Southern California where they have resided for 45 years.
Phanor served honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he ascended to the rank of Staff Sergeant and Chief of his Anti-Aircraft Section. He worked at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches prior to relocating to California where he joined the United Brotherhood of Carpenters Local 25, which he retired from in 1977. Phanor worked with great pride as a professional carpenter and after retirement, he lent his expertise to St. Mary’s Academy and Kingswood Village until he was 85. He enjoyed not only working with his hands but was a leader in his field; Phanor thoroughly enjoyed training and educating young men and women as a professional in his craft. His legacy continues in the construction industry with his children, grandchildren and numerous relatives exemplifying his professionalism and expertise in the industry.
Phanor loved visiting with his family, taking photos at gatherings, reminiscing of old times and dancing at the Zydeco La-Las. His enthusiasm led him to be an integral part in the development of the Bayou Talk newspaper and he cherished it as if it were one of his children. Phanor will remain in the hearts and memories of those who cared for and loved him and his impact on other’s lives will not be forgotten.
Phanor passed away peacefully, on November 29, 2008, surrounded by family, at the VA hospital in Loma Linda, Ca. and went home to the Lord our Savior. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, 8 children, 38 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren, his sisters Louise Chevalier and Mozell Metoyer of Natchitoches, Louisiana, and host of nieces and nephews, along with a very long list of family and friends.

There will be a special stage for Blues music, Richard will like it, could you urge him to dance with me? Like I have seen you dance with MaMa???

You lived a long life, and, the Senior after your name would indicate your a father with a Junior. However, I wouldn't be surprized if you outlived him though. Your also "old" enought to remember the term "dapper" as applied to men.....and your picture shows your dapper. (For you young'ngs, "dapper" was then what "GQ" is to men today.....SHARP as we used to say in the 50's...meaning VERY ATTRACTIVE.) I would have liked to have known you. You are now in Heaven. Bye

My dad always started a conservation with me by saying "well son" so i will start by saying " will dad". Throughout the relatively brief history of the United States there have been many great leaders, such as Washington, Adams, Jefferson, and Roosevelt all became presidents; others like Franklin, Webster, Anthony, and King made a dramatic impact on mankind without reaching the White House. There are other leaders, on a local and national levels, in all aspects of society, who could be labeled ... » read more

“God’s Amazing Grace”
By Louis H. Metoyer
Being so much with Mom and Dad these past few years has given me insights to the depth of Amazing Grace. What and amazing grace that I have received from Mom and Dad’s relationship. We all have heard the song but now I have lived the depth of those words as I walk this journey with them. Engaging in conversation was fertile ground for the seeds of grace to harvest.
Our Lord do give us grace in many way, yet we so often are so busy or self cent... » read more
