Robert J. “Bob” Hughes of Basking Ridge, NJ passed away Tuesday May 7, 2013 at Jersey Shore Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Hughes was an investigator for the NJ Attorney General, Division of Gaming Enforcement for over twenty-five years before retiring in 2008. He was 70 years old.
Born in Newark, NJ to the late Hannah (née McGinley) and James J. Hughes, Robert was a graduate of Irvington Tech High School. From 1962 to 1966 he served his country aboard the USS Kidd in the United States Navy. Following his military service Robert maintained an active membership in the American Legion and the Tin Can Sailor Association. An electrician by trade and member of the IEBW Robert lived in Bradley Beach, NJ during the 1970s. Throughout the decade he served the Bradley Beach Police Department as a Patrolman before being promoted to Detective.
In 1983 Robert began a long career as a Gaming Investigator for the NJ State Attorney General’s Office. During that time he was involved in numerous policeman’s unions and associations including: P.B.A Local 356, P.B.A. Local 50, NJ and NY Detectives Crime Clinic, NJ Honor Legion of Law Enforcement Agencies, NJ Narcotic Enforcement Officers Association, Society of Investigators of Greater Newark, NJ and NYPD Emerald Society. From 2009 to 2012 he was President of the Morris County, NJ Police and Fireman’s Emerald Society. In 2010 he was honored by the Society as “Emerald of the Year.”
