Trip to the Mayan Ruins in Mexico

Return to Memorial Post Condolences

We left out early that morning in June..Mexico bound. Dad was so excited you could feel the adrenaline coming off of him in waves. We landed in Cancun airport and Dad was all smiles. We went to the Real Grand Hotel and Resort in Playa Del Carmen.

Dad was beside himself..all excited.

He rose early every morning , went downstairs to the concierge to get a cup of coffee, and headed down the street they call Fifth Avenue..The streetvendors would be out and plying their trades..the street abuzz with activity...lots to see. Dad just thrilled to it. He watched the street come alive every morning we were there. He came back in time to meet us all for breakfast in the dining room.

The Mayan Ruins were especially interesting to my Dad. He climbed to the very top of Chichen Itza Mayan Pyramid and reveled in the whole experience that is Mexico. We went to the Grand Ceynote and Dad jumped off the ledge..and into the cold water in an instant..taking my breath before it most likely took his..

He truly lived his life with a certain gusto:  an unmistakable love for life was in him all of his life. He tried all the foods offered to him there, including eating 'sauteed prickly pear cactus'..He was something else.:-)

I am so glad to have made that trip with him. He talked about it right up to the end of his life. Precious memories were made there on that trip.
