This memorial website was created in the memory of our beloved Steven Champion who was born in Seattle Washington on 26th May 1952 and passed away on 27th July 2012, 60 years of age.
What can I say about a man like my husband? We met a few weeks shy of 3 years ago, and Steve being the honest man he was told me within minutes of our meeting he had cancer so it was ok if I walked away he wouldn't blame me. We had met on the internet a few weeks before we met in person. Emails developed into many hours long telephone conversations followed by Steve being Steve asking why the hell we hadn't met in person yet since we just lived across town from each other. That first meeting was all it took, here was a man as accepting of me as I was of him – no hidden agendas and on the same wave length.
It took me a while to realize this beautiful man was just exactly what I wanted and needed in my life and although trust on both our parts took a bit of time, it developed into the most meaningful and loving relationship either of us had ever experienced.
Steve was a bit rough around the edges, a lot dry wit and sarcasm.... the absolute perfect match for my own personality. Although Steve was all of those things I found a highly intelligent and sensitive man behind all the bravado and facade.
My husband had the biggest heart of any man I have ever known and would do anything to help someone. I saw a side to him that very few people in this world ever saw, a man that after punishing his children would sit and cry because it hurt him more to scold or spank his children than it ever hurt them. I saw a man who could sit in our kitchen for hours and watch the birds and squirrels playing outside, a man that although he had cancer himself and be so sick this wonderful man would go on bike runs for a child with cancer, a man that through so much pain he could hardly walk would take his cane , go to the garage and hop on his bike just to feel the wind in his face and God in his soul.
No one will ever know the man that thought he hurt my feelings leave the house only minutes later return carrying a dozen long stemmed red roses. The man that knowing my love of antiques bought me a reproduction miniature cast iron stove, not knowing I had wanted one since I was a child.
He was a proud man and so proud of his southern heritage he joined the SCV and the SCVMC and found a brotherhood like none he had ever known. Those men were his true brothers in every way that counted. Along the way he met some beautiful ladies I consider true sisters and friends, ladies that loved and cared about Steve so much. I can never express my love and gratitude to the wonderful men of the SCV, SCVMC, the ladies of The Order of Confederate Rose and everyone that touched his life in such a positive way.
Steve's final wishes were for a true southern sendoff SCVMC style, bikes leading the way and the sound of Harley's roar. Thank you all for granting his final wishes and I am certain he is in heaven with the biggest smile on his face you could ever imagine.
Steve, my darling handsome husband this is for you, I will love and miss you always. Do not stand at my grave and weep. I am not there. I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow; I am the diamond glints on snow; I am the sunlight on ripened grain; I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning hush I am the quick uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circling flight. I am the soft star that shines at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry. I am not there, I did not die. |
