Toivo passed away after a short battle with kidney cancer at the age of 59. He will be sadly missed by his beloved wife and best friend of 35 years, Deborah (Baran), his loving children Eric (Reiko) and Nicole. Toivo is survived by his brothers Arnold (Ruth) Makila of Thunder Bay and Pentti Makila of Red Deer, his mother & father-in-law Alice & Len Baran of Thunder Bay, brothers-in-law Kaarlo Niemi of Geraldton, Jeff (Rosanne) Baran of Thunder Bay, Don (MaryLynn) Baran of Aurora, Dave (Suzanne) Baran of Toronto and sister-in-law Barbara Paquette of Thunder Bay, nieces & nephews Laila, Karen, Liz, Arnold, Deborah, Liisa, Jeremy, Kyle, Shannon, Courtney, Luke, Ben, Simon, Jason, Brian, Alexandra, Megan, many great nieces & great nephews and four God children. He will also be missed by many loving friends and coworkers. He was predeceased by his dear parents Lauri and Saimi Makila, sister, Irene Niemi and nephew Nicholas. Toivo will be fondly remembered for his contagious laughter, loving kindness and generous spirit. He had a wonderful love of people and was a precious gift to us all.
Born in Port Arthur, ON. Toivo grew up in Geraldton, ON and enjoyed spending his summers with his family, fishing, swimming & in the sauna. In his teenage years he moved to Thunder Bay, ON attended Hillcrest High School and eventually Confederation College obtaining a diploma in Hotel Management. He met his lifetime partner in marriage, love and friendship Deborah in 1974. Married in 1975, they had two children; Eric and Nicole. Toivo enjoyed family life immensely creating a warm home that welcomed family and friends. Always a prankster, his sense of humour made any situation fun. Toivo's work took the family to Columbus, Nebraska in 1987, Calgary, AB in 1988 and then led them back to Thunder Bay in 1991. Toivo and Deborah have made Vancouver their home for the last 12 years. Cooking, travelling, music, watching movies, bowling, volunteering and enjoying nature were just some of Toivo's many passions. He was an avid golfer who loved playing cards with his friends and spending hours working on his latest sports pools.
With a career in the grain industry that spanned 33 years, Toivo loved the challenge of his work and was always having fun with the people he worked with. For the last 5 years Toivo was President of the Grain Elevators and Processing Society.
The importance of deepening his faith was a cornerstone in Toivo's life. During the last few months, the presence of God was very comforting to him. Toivo felt greatly blessed by all the prayers and loving wishes that were sent his way throughout his illness.
A memorial will be celebrated Friday, November 5th at 11:00am in St. Paul's Catholic Church, 424 Esplanade W., North Vancouver BC, V7M 1A7. 1 year later and it is just like yesterday that I said goodbye to my dear friend.
Our lives continue to be filled with the Minutia of the day but our prayers are constantly with Deborah, Nicole, Eric and Laiko.
I remember fondly all the great times I shared with Toivo and constantly laugh at hsi humour and wit. The occasions were too numerous to count, but suffice to say those memories are burnt into my memory bank.
Toivo , my friend, you are deeply missed.

A year has past since Toivo left us. A flood of memories have filled my mind over the past few days.We have all laughed about The pools, the bets that fun we had with him. We have discussed what he would have been doing on Thanksgiving at the shelters for those less fortunate and how his family must miss him so much. All of us who worked and played with Toivo talk about him with fond memories more often that you might think. He was and still is a true inspiration to us all.

It has been 1/2 a year since our friend passed. I still think of him every day and miss him more and more. There is a memorial bench on the Vancouver Sea Wall in his honor. It is just past the swiming pool at 2nd beach. It is a must visit for all of us. A moving tribute to say the least.
